SAN DIEGO, Sept. 5.--Held, it is claimed by local spiritualists, by an evil spirit, the astral body of J.H. Disler, a Los Angeles trumpet medium, is unable to reoccupy its mortal abode. The body of Disler, with the life flame burning feebly, according to physicians, is at a local sanatorium, where it was taken a week ago last Saturday after a seance held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Ballou of Coronado.
Present at the seance besides Disler and his wife were Mr. and Mrs. Ballou, Mrs. Lyman J. Gage, their daughter, Lyman J.Gage, former secretary of the United States treasury, and a few intimate friends.
PARALYSIS, SAY DOCTORS
Before going into the trance Disler had fasted for several days and on the day in question he broke the fast by eating a hearty meal. When he failed to come out of the trance, he was removed to the sanatorum. Doctors say he is suffering from a stroke of paralysis, caused by a blood clot on the brain. A consultation will be held this afternoon.
Mrs. Disler is quoted as saying that she is willing to have a “circle” formed for the purpose of releasing Disler’s spirit from the power of the evil spirit which spiritualists say is holding it. The spiritualists, however, refuse to officiate unless Disler is removed from the sanatorium to one of their homes. So far the doctors have not countenanced the plan.
SPIRITS AT WAR
It is claimed that the seance was arranged at the home of the Ballous for the purpose of receiving a spirit message through Disler for one of those present. It is also alleged that the message was a warning to the person in question against a certain woman and that the evil spirit took a hand in the proceedings in time to prevent Disler’s spirit from delivering the warning.
According to a local “drugless” doctor, Disler, after going into a trance, recovered partly a week ago and made the following statement:
“I am possessed with an evil spirit. I know what is the matter with me. If only I could get my head together I could get out of this bed and be all right.”
Then he lapsed back into the former comatose state. That he is near death the physicians at the sanatorium believe, and they stick by their diagnosis of paralysis.
Lyman J. Gage and party of friends visited the sanatorium yesterday.
