Over the River

BY MINNIE J. OWREY

Over the river, the lonely river.
Whose tide sings on in a moan forever,
I stand and gaze ’till the strange hands beckon,
Beckon afar from their distant shore.
Whilst the waves aweary,
Beating and surging upon the shore.
Over the river.
The weird lights quiver.

Over the river, the mystic river,
A loved one went from this earth forever,
I missed her face where the shadows gather
Hiding the dark elysian strand;
The waves are sighing,
Their night song dying.
Voiceless and sad on the unknown strand,
Over the river,
No stars beams quiver.

Over the river, the silent river,
Are gone the loved and the lost forever,
Of all the beautiful scenes I cherished.
There is only memory and memory’s death;
Of the circle broken,
Of the dear words spoken,
There is only memory and memory’s death.
By this cold chill river
How my heart-cords quiver!

Over the river, the death dark river,
The strange, weird lights from the far shore quiver,
Lonely and old by this shore I am waiting,
Waiting and watching for one to come.
Who will lull me to rest,
On his ghostly breast
So I watch for this unknown guest to come,
Over the river,
Where strange lights quiver.
